The ASHRAE India Chapter was approved by Society in the Atlanta, Georgia Meeting on Feb 15, 1990. Mr. David S. Butler, ASHRAE President, inaugurated the Chapter on March 29, 1990. This was the first Indian Chapter and hence members of the Chapter were from all over India.
The first Chapter President was Dr. Prem C Jain. Some of the key members who founded the chapter are Mr. M M Pande, Mr. R V Simha and Mr. V K Wadhwa. ASHRAE India Chapter became part of Region X in the society year 1992-93 and became part of Region at
Large in the year 2001-2002.
The Chapter under its Sustainability Activity installed a 5kw solar power plant at a remote village in Uttrakhand, India and received recognition from the Society for the activity. The Installation ceremony for the 26th BOG of the chapter was held on 8th July, 2016.
